At Dormers Wells Infant and Junior School, we are committed to providing a curriculum which is broad and balanced, and provides our pupils with opportunities to gain essential knowledge, skills and understanding which will enable them to flourish and reach their full potential academically, physically and artistically. Our intention is to provide our pupils with the skills, knowledge and opportunities to develop an appreciation of different forms of music and to be able to discuss, express and evaluate the impact music has on them. We aim  to ensure that pupils who are musically gifted or have a passion for music are provided with opportunities to develop their abilities and skills; and are provided with a range of platforms on which they can showcase their talents.

EYFS Implementation

KS1 Implementation

Our small pupils begin to build a repertoire of songs and dances. They do this using nursery rhymes and poetry. They are guided by their teachers to explore the different sounds of instruments and use these to develop their artistic talents and use of rhyme, rhythm and pulse. This aids in developing their spoken language.

In year 1 and 2, we encourage pupils to use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes. They begin toexplore tuned and untuned instruments musically in groups and as a class and experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music. Pupils guided to develop social skills through co-operation with others in the shared experience of music making.

In years 3 and 4, pupils  play and perform in solo and ensemble contexts, using their voices and playing musical instruments with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression. They improvise and compose music for a range of purposes using the inter-related dimensions of music. Pupils relish experiencing music from different traditions and from great composers and musicians whilst develop an understanding of the history of music.

In years 5 and 6, pupils dive deeper into music tuition. They learn instruments from qualified musicians and teachers throughout the year. Our pupils transition from the school having a wide repertoire and confidence which they will be able to use to create original, imaginative, and distinctive compositions. A musical understanding underpinned by high levels of aural perception and enjoyment of music combined with a rapidly developing level of technical expertise

rights respecting school

Dormers Wells Primary School is a Right Respecting School we follow the UN Conventions Rights for children where we teach children about rights, through rights and for rights. We believe children who have understanding of their rights also understand how others and how they should be treated. Also, we aim to create a safe environment and atmosphere for our children. Rights Respecting gives children a voice to express themselves and challenge any injustices. They feel empowered to access information and make informed decisions about their learning, health and wellbeing. As a school, we want to equip our children to advocate for rights where they can promote equality, fairness and safety.
